DIY Clogged Toilet Tips

For homeowners, a clogged toilet is probably one of the most common plumbing issues. Though your first step might be to panic and give us a call, there are a few things you can try beforehand.

If you find yourself with an overflowing, non-flushing toilet — here’s what you should do next:

Wait It Out

If you have more than one toilet in the house, you can always wait it out. Over time, gravity and the force of the water can break down the clog, allowing it to eventually flush. If the clog is a bit more than just some extra toilet paper, then this could fail — and you’ll want to be able to shut off the water source quickly, to avoid a flood.

The Hot Water Trick

If you only have one toilet or don’t have the time to sit and wait, you can try to force things along with some hot water. When preparing your water, keep in mind to not pour in too much. By adding in some hot water, you might have given the clog the push it needs to get moving. Not only is it pushing gravity along, but the hot water can also help break down the waste moving along in the pipes.

Get The Plunger

You can always try the tried and true method of plunging. One of the greatest tips to know, when it comes to plunging away a clog, is getting a good seal. Make sure you have the proper plunger for your toilet bowl and don’t start plunging until you have good suction on it —  and with the right down-and-up-stroke, the force could help loosen the clog. The big clue is when you remove the plunger, a big gush of water goes down the drain. If you are having no luck, then it might be time to move on.
